FAQs
WHAT GOES INTO A MIDNIGHT CANDLE, AND WHY?
We use a custom blend of fully refined paraffin wax to make our scented candles. This type of wax has the ability to hold and throw more fragrance oil than any other candle wax. Paraffin has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for many common uses including candle making. We use the maximum amount the highest quality fragrance oils. All oils are phthalates-free and approved for burning in candles by the National Candle Association. We use a pre-waxed cotton wick with a zinc core to ensure wicks remain centered, stable, and burning safely. All wicks are lead-free and non-toxic.
HOW DO I PREVENT MY CANDLE FROM TUNNELING?
Tunneling: A “tunnel” is formed in candle and unmelted wax is left on container wall
Midnight Candles are crafted to burn evenly as long as the candle is allowed to burn at least until the wax pool reaches the edge of the container. Burn our candles for at least 3.5 hours each time. The longer you burn a container filled candle each time, the longer the life of the candle will be.
WHY IS MY CANDLE SOOTING AND HOW DO I CORRECT IT?
Soot: is produced during incomplete combustion.
ex: The wisp of smoke you sometimes see when a candle is initially lit, is caused by only the cotton wick burning until wax begins to melt . This creates incomplete combustion and may take a few minutes to stabilize. It is not toxic and you can virtually eliminate the amount of soot given off by doing the following:
1) Keep your wick trimmed to about an 1/8 of an inch (width of 2 stacked nickels).
2) Keep burning candle away from vents and drafts.
IS PETROLEUM BASED PARAFFIN WAX SAFE?
Yes. Validated scientific studies have shown that all major candle waxes exhibit the same basic burn behavior and produce virtually identical combustion by-products, both in terms of composition and amount. To date, no peer-reviewed scientific study has ever collected or analyzed any emissions data on any candle wax, including petroleum-based paraffin, and proven them to be harmful to human health.
TELL ME MORE ABOUT HOW CANDLES ARE MADE!
To produce scented candles, fragrance oils are blended with candle wax that has been melted at 125°- 140°. once hardened, the fragrance oil becomes integrated as part of the wax. When the candle is lit, the heat given off from the flame will melt the blended wax and begin to create a liquid pool around the wick. This process will release the fragrance oil and the heat will assist to carry the scent throughout the room. The longer it burns, the larger the pool and the more exposed fragrance oil available.
